The Joy of Hosting the First Barbeque of the summer
The Joy of Hosting the First Barbecue of the Summer
The weather is warm again, and school is letting out for the summer. For some of us, our kids are grown, but either way, this season is all about family time. It is also the perfect time to catch up with friends you have not seen in a while, enjoy a cold drink or a glass of sangria, and settle into some good conversation.
What is your go-to barbecue dish for the first cookout of the season? Is it a fresh salad, burgers and hot dogs, or something else entirely? It really depends on the kind of gathering you are planning.
One of the easiest ways to plan a barbecue is to keep things simple. Preparing a few salads or desserts a day or two ahead can make the day much less stressful. And if you are hosting a potluck, let your guests pitch in. It takes some of the pressure off the hostess and makes everyone feel part of the fun.
How to make things fun for your guests
There is always plenty to do when planning a barbecue, and keeping your guests busy while trying to be #1 hostess. So consider adding a few simple games like cornhole, horseshoes, or bocce ball. They help guests relax and get to know one another. Games are also a great way to keep guests entertained until dinner. Make it fun with a few playful prizes.
Add some rocking vibes! or keep it relaxed with some soft ebb n flow! It’s also about just chillin and having a great afternoon!
Menu Planning
If it is just family, planning the menu can feel easy because you already know everyone’s likes and dislikes. But if you are inviting special guests, or someone who may be a little particular about food, it helps to plan.
Ask about your guests’ food preferences ahead of time and try to include something they enjoy. This simple step helps them feel welcome and comfortable. If you are doing a potluck, inviting guests to bring a favorite dish can also help them feel more comfortable and included.
For me, a barbecue is not complete without a pickle tray or a crudités platter. Deviled eggs are another great option because they are easy to grab and perfect for casual snacking. For dessert, keep it simple with easy-to-serve squares or bars. I do like trifle in jars it is so much fun to make! Both are easy to make and offer just the right amount of sweetness without feeling too heavy.
So, what is your signature dish for the night? What are you serving as the host? Will there be an appetizer to give your guests? it will give them a little taste of what’s to come on the menu!
If you are serving burgers and hot dogs, keep the sides simple with a fresh crudité platter and potato chips and other munchies. You can also set up a condiment bar for the burgers & Dogs and make it fun! Then there is pulled pork, this is so good with lots of barbeque sauce on a bun with some fresh slaw! For the adults, try adding bacon-wrapped jalapeños stuffed with pulled pork and cream cheese. It’s a great appetizer! If you prefer something milder, mini peppers work just as well. This is a great time to get creative!
How to make your back yard cozy!
And of course, do not forget to think about seating your guests. Set up some extra chairs, some in the shade and in the sun. Perhaps some umbrellas.
Create a warm, easygoing atmosphere that helps every guest feel comfortable, especially anyone who is new to the group.
A small drink station with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options is always a nice touch. Add mixers, fresh fruit, and playful details like umbrella picks to make it feel festive. A little lighting around the station can also make the space feel more inviting.
Set the mood with lanterns, candles, and plenty of cozy seating. When I worked at World Market, customers came in every summer looking for pillows and throws to create that welcoming outdoor feel. Small details like these can make your yard feel warm, stylish, and inviting.
Set up a table with sturdy paper plates, plastic cups, and utensils wrapped in napkins for easy serving. Add a little color to make it feel festive, or choose a warm, welcoming theme that ties everything together.
The secret to a great barbecue is a mix of comfort, ambiance, good friends and great food. Most of all, it is about enjoying good company and even better conversation.
